Today, at 2PM, free-agency will officially begin, and according to multiple outlets, Tyson Chandler is 98% sure he will become a New York Knickerbocker.
This news came as a remarkable surprise to most Knicks fans, because as recently as this yesterday morning, no one saw this coming; we were still looking at the addition of Grant Hill to be the highlight of this year’s offseason, in hopes of acquiring Chris Paul next year. However, that all changed quickly.
For the first time in quite some time, the Knicks are spending a large chuck of cash on a defensive-minded center; a type of player the Knicks currently lack. Tyson Chandler is one of the only players in the league that can change a game based on his defense and rebounding. Adding his defensive skills, motivation, and recently acquired, locker-room leadership, Tyson Chandler could prove to be one of the Knicks’ most valued off-season pickups in many years.
With this addition, the Knicks will no longer be “under-sized”, nor would they any longer “play no defense”, because right away, Tyson Chandler would bring both of these things to the table. In my opinion, the most important part of the signing, is that Amare Stoudemire will now be able to play his natural position: power forward.
The Knick will have one of the most formidable front-lines in all of basketball, and will be able to compete with any team. No longer should the Knicks get man-handled by teams with big men.
Also, instead of hoarding cap space for a run at next year’s marquee free-agents, and spending the necessary money this year, on an elite crop of free-agent centers, the Knicks show they they are committing to winning a championship. In my opinion, this is a big step in the right direction.
This is a big move for the Knicks’ organization, and let’s hope it is completed in the near future!
