Ok. Got my breath back. Heart rate back to normal. After coming back from a 10-point deficit with 3:45 left in the fourth quarter, the Knicks defeated the Chicago Bulls in overtime, 100-91. Carmelo Anthony, who hit both the game tying three-pointer to send the game to overtime and the winner, led the Knicks with 43 points on 16-for-31 shooting. Derrick Rose led the bulls with 29 points.
You could not have asked for a better first quarter from the Knicks. It almost seemed too good to be true, as the Knicks opened up a 27-6 lead after eight and half minutes. Chicago ended the quarter on a 13-4 run to make it 31-19 after the first 12 minutes.
The Bulls improved on their 27% first quarter to shoot 47% in the second quarter and outscore the Knicks 26-22 to inch closer. Meanwhile, the Knicks cooled off after their 58% opening period to shoot just 31% in the second. Melo led New York with 22 points at the half while the Bulls were led by Luol Deng’s 11 points. Rose, coming back from a groin injury after missing 12 games, had just seven points on 1-for-6 shooting.
Knicks fans newest nightmare showed up in the third quarter as the Bulls outscored the Knicks 30-19. Derrick Rose shook off his rusty first half, scoring 14 points in the quarter with three shoots from beyond the arc. They took their first lead of the game on a Corey Brewer jumper with 46 seconds left in the period. They finished the quarter up 75-72.
A Derrick Rose four point play pushed the Bulls lead to nine and it eventually reached 10 with 3:45 remaining. However, three misses by Rose in the final 2:30 combined with four missed Bulls free throws allowed the Knicks to stay in it, culminating with Anthony drilling a three-pointer with 11.2 seconds remaining. Rose air balled a last second attempt, sending the game to overtime.
The Bulls raced out to a four-point lead in overtime thanks to the combo of Rose and Joakim Noah. After three Knicks misses, Anthony brought them to within two with a driving layup with 1:04 remaining. JR Smith, who let’s just say had his ups and downs in this game, stripped Rose on the Bulls next possession. Melo then missed a layup, rebounded his miss and went up to miss again but Chandler picked it up. Smith missed a three-point shot but Chandler was there again for the rebound with 22.8 left.
Then Carmelo Anthony did what superstars do. He got the ball, milked some time and then nailed a three to give the Knicks a 100-99 left with 8.2 seconds left. Rose, another superstar in his own right, couldn’t match Melo, as he missed his driving layup attempt, giving New York a huge victory.
With the Philadelphia 76ers losing to the Boston Celtics tonight, the Knicks are now tied with the Sixers for seventh in the East and hold the tie breaker. They remain a game ahead of the Milwaukee Bucks. The Knicks and Bulls go back at it Tuesday night at 9:30pm.
