Rathan-Mayes and Hayes, two promising players in New York’s G League affiliate, find 10-day deals with the Grizzlies and Raptors, respectively.
Westchester Knicks forward Nigel Hayes will sign a 10-day contract with the Toronto Raptors, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports.
Hayes has played 38 games for the New York Knicks’ G League affiliate Westchester, helping the team (with much roster turnover) earn the league’s best record as of March 5. Hayes, who graduated from the University of Wisconsin last May, previously signed a 10-day contract with the Los Angeles Lakers before returning to the DubKnicks. Hayes had joined the Knicks’ training camp in September on a non-guaranteed contract in 2017.
News of Hayes’ deal with Toronto comes on the heels of Westchester guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes signing with the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday, per Yahoo Sports’ Shams Charania. Rathan-Mayes, from Florida State, was the de facto leader of the DubKnicks team after Trey Burke and two-way players Isaiah Hicks and Luke Kornet largely left to join the big league Knicks team.
Coached by Mike Miller, the Westchester Knicks sit atop the G League standings with a 28–14 record and only eight games remaining. Nigel Hayes had averaged 16.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists for the DubKnicks while Rathan-Mayes, in 39 games with Westchester, averaged 16.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 7.1 assists.
